Brave — a poem about braving the storms together

Brave — a poem about braving the storms together

Those of you who have followed my blog for any significant length of time know that I love participating in National Poetry Writing Month, better known as NaPoWriMo, where you write a poem a day for the 30 days of April. Jennifer Patino just clued me in about OctPoWriMo, which of course is 31 poems in 31 days for the month of October!

I'm cheating a little with this first piece because I actually wrote it back in August, but I really wanted to share this one with you and it felt like the perfect beginning. Quite timely too, as it happens to have a tropical storm theme. I hope you find some meaning in it.

Brave

The chaos rips through the air,
sending sheets of ocean
wildly against our comfort zone.
The tropical storm returns home.

Placid moments hint at violence
but between the sheets,
we still sing of love.
There will be no end of us.

While the eye is centered, deadly,
let me crack a window
and let's climb outside just for a time
to feel the void and comprehend
that one day we will live again.

While our dreams are sleeping soundly
and the bravest of the brave still share our space,
we will pause and breathe and play,
building hope from these dark days.

When we let go, we'll let go,
and we'll love whatever lands we turn up in.
We'll burn your candle brightly
and ink your patterns forever on our skin
so you will recognize us when we meet again.
