Good Enough Today

Once, it seemed smart.
Once, it seemed safe.
Later, it still seemed fun enough
to warrant the risk, to warrant the pain.
But now I pay and I pay and I pay.
I long for a moment that doesn't feel this way.
I thirst for a summer that feels like it should,
where the company is family
and the food is really good—
not just good to my taste buds
but good for my soul,
home cooked and happy,
made with love,
freshly grown.
I don't want to time travel.
I want to fix the here and now.
Regrets have no place at this table
but there's always room for hope.
We've all made multiple mistakes
but we know forgiveness is a breath away,
and even though nothing will ever be the same,
it's good enough—it's good enough—
goddamn, it's good enough today.
